Hello this is Bridget Osho and welcome to the 4th episode of the podcast series, I’m the founder of chèriemamma and a holistic fertility therapist. Today we are going to be talking about one of the major causes of the ovulation problems, when you aren’t ovulating regularly or when you aren’t at all.
What we are going to be looking at today is prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone that helps to trigger milk production, so when a woman gets pregnant, she produces high level of prolactin to prepare her for breastfeeding, and when she actually gives birth to her baby, she produces even higher amount of prolactin. It helps to stimulate milk production. Now, the problem is some women for different reasons, sometimes we don’t know why, produce high prolactin when not pregnant or even breastfeeding.
The problem this causes is, once there’s high prolactin in your system, it suppresses ovulation because it’s the body’s way of reacting that the person is pregnant and doesn’t need to ovulate or she has a baby and doesn’t need to to ovulate because she doesn’t want to get pregnant. That’s why some women will successfully use breastfeeding to space their kids. If you are somebody trying to get pregnant, this is real problem because you need to ovulate so that you can release an egg so you can get pregnant. High prolactin isn’t good news for somebody who is trying to get pregnant.
How to know if you have high prolactin. First of, you could do hormonal test profile, but there are a few things which are common to women who have high prolactin. You might discover that you have discharging nipples, such as producing milk. Your breasts are full or you have nipple pains. Not everyone has this symptom but most women will have variety of these symptoms that will lead you to think you have high prolactin. In order to know for sure, you can request a hormonal test profile from your doctor. About all the things that have caused or can trigger high prolactin in the past, like I said isn’t very clear but a few things have been reported to lead to high prolactin are; high level of stress which can cause hormonal imbalance. Medical diseases like liver or kidney diseases or hyperthyroidism and things like that.
More importantly, what can reduce high prolactin in your system? What you can do naturally is try to manage stress because if stress can cause hormonal imbalance, then you will want to make to sure you are managing stress. Managing stress is a big topic and I will get to that in one of my podcast series. You can also use vitamin B6, it’s believed to help reduce prolactin. I can’t recommend dosage because it depends on each person, but you can follow the recommendations on the packs that you buy and that should be a good start for you. Then try to sleep well, see that you fit in about 7hours of sleep. I know this can be difficult if you are working and you have a lot of things to do but if you don’t sleep well, you can have hormonal imbalance and that just the truth. So make sure you get about 7 hours sleep every night, that way, you will be working hard to reduce prolactin.
In addition to this, if you haven’t already, please go to the website; www.cheriemamma.org and download a free pdf. That pdf contains a few things you can do to help you to manage hormonal imbalance, so you can have more frequent ovulation and better periods. I know some women like medical medications to resolve high prolactin but doesn’t always work and they have all side effects.
What I believe when it comes to hormonal imbalance if you have been following me for a while is that it’s also better to allow your body to regulate the hormones as it needs. Give it the tools that it needs to do that work itself so that you aren’t stopping production of prolactin, and you aren’t triggering another hormonal imbalance because the body is like a symphony, the hormones are suppose to be working hand in hand.
Some hormones might be on the high side and sometimes the other can be too low to regulate it. Once you start work with the hormones, you try to resolve it by either reducing or increasing it and when you are using medications, you will find out that it will cause other problems with other hormones because your body is reacting and may be over reacting to that medication because it will want to trigger low hormones to rectify that problem. But if it’s your body that is naturally resolving that hormone itself, it will get that balance it needs. Apart from that, this medications don’t always work, it can also trigger other problems.
This is my tips for high prolactin. Follow the information on the document that is on my website. Try to manage stress, use vitamin B6 and try to sleep well and this will gradually help you balance out your hormones. And again, I need to say this, this is a natural fertility therapy, we have general indications but for each person, there is a very individual thing that you need to do.
